A Dike                  B chilled margin

Some examples of dikes (A) and the chilled margins (B) which mark the dikes lateral extent. Chilled margins also provide a means to determine the direction of cooling thus can provide insight into the general direction of the propagating magma. Cooling occurred from fine grained, darker to the coarse grained, lighter rock.

Basaltic dikes in Wadi Hilti

On two occasions we observed what appeared to be the lateral extend of dikes, showing how narrow these lava propagation can be. Note the difference between the coarse grained diabase (lighter gray, cooled slower) and the darker basaltic glass which cooled rapidly after intruding into the cool rock. The veins are filled with epidote and later with calcite (which is not as apparent in the pictures). The individual crystals were fairly large (several mm^3).

Wadi Salahi - a one square meter grid.

Monica Olson and I chose this area to document the orientation and size of the hydrothermally derived veins
as well as the alteration minerals deposited within. We documented epidote, iron oxide and calcite veins. The map produced will be shown here in future.
